By Mike Leone

January 13, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hermitage, PA…Mercer Raceway Park celebrated the 2006 season in grand style Saturday night, January 13, as the beautiful Normandy Banquet Center in Hermitage, Pa. played host for the fourth time to the annual awards banquet and dinner.

The top ten drivers in each of the four divisions received their point fund monies and plaques. The following 2006 track champions also received an engraved Mercer Raceway Park championship watch compliments of Kidd’s Jewelry in Greenville, Pa. and an embroidered jacket: Bob Felmlee-RoadRunner & Lake Road Auto Sales Sprint Cars, Frank Guidace-American Racer/Lias Tire Modifieds, Brian Booher-Tire Express Stock Cars, and Bryan Wagner-Maurer’s Trading Post Strictly Stocks.

For the eighth consecutive year under owner Vicki Emig, Mercer Raceway Park continued its tradition of honoring special achievements at its banquet. Five of those types of awards were once again given out Saturday night.

The “Legacy” Award honors and remembers the late Bill Emig. With the exception of family, this year’s recipient knew Bill better than anyone. Frank Guidace worked on Bill’s race cars as a youngster and later would take a Six-Cylinder Modified from his race shop and use as his first race car. The 2006 season was a career year for Guidace winning his first championship of any kind and winning two of the biggest Modified races of the season in the Jeff Hoffman Memorial and “Little Guy Nationals”.

Living legends are those that will forever be held in high respect by those that enjoyed their excellence. This year’s “Living Legend” Award was bestowed to Ron Eperthener, Sr. Though he was never fortunate enough to win a championship, he won many races and the Grove City native will always be remembered for his yellow #333 Coupes and Late Models. His son Ron currently competes in the Modified division and his grandson Matt Kocher, granddaughter Olivia Eperthener, and son-in-law Barry Bulfone have all raced in years past. The Grove City, Pa. is a driver that embodies everything good about Mercer Raceway Park.

The “Horizon” Award was put in place to recognize drivers whose careers shine as brightly as the horizon. This year, for the first time, the award was handed out to three drivers. The first recipient was Bryan Wagner, who was actually a “true” rookie having never competed before. The teenager swept the double features on May 6 for his first career wins on a night we remember his uncle Dave Wagner. He went on to do the unthinkable winning the title in the Strictly Stock division.

The second “Horizon” recipient was Mike Pegher, Jr. Making his first attempt as a Mercer regular, the Wexford, Pa. youngster captured a track-high eight wins despite missing four races and ran side-by-side and as clean as can be with the veteran Mercer racers earning everyone’s respect.

The third “Horizon” winner was the 17-year-old Danny Holtgraver. The Pittsburgh, Pa. driver jumped from the Micro Sprints into the mighty 410 Sprints. He had a season-best runner-up on May 27 and had nine top 10s. He also finished runner-up in the National 410 Sprint Car Rookie-of-the-Year.
Two “Outstanding Achievement” Awards were handed out. Riki Likowski earned his not on performance, but by his effort and dedication. The driver towed each week from Hollis, New Hampshire- some 9 hours and nearly 600 miles each way. Likowski never missed any of the 18 nights despite racing with a broken foot one night and putting a car together after destroying his car in a World of Outlaw show in New York in a midweek show.
The second “Outstanding Achievement” was given to Andy Buckley. The Stoneboro, Pa. driver moved ahead of Alan Dellinger with his 22nd career win on the Stock Car win list since the track reopened in 1994. He’s also won at least one race for each of the last six seasons.

The “Majestic” Award honors those that have made grand, noble, and dignified gestures on behalf of Mercer Raceway Park and in general. The husband-wife duo of Walter and Eleanore Patton received the award for their dedication over the past five seasons. Though they didn’t start out as race fans, but as the aunt and uncle of Vicki Emig, they’ve become two of the most well-liked employees. They’re behind the scenes people arriving early and some of the last to leave.

The “Appreciation” Award was given to another dedicated employee. Marilyn Benic has worked at the speedway every night since the 1997 season working in the track office doing various tasks such as answering the phones, the driver payoffs, and the track program. Benic, as well as Likowski and the Pattons will also be receiving engraved watches compliments of Kidd’s Jewelry.

Bob Felmlee captured his third Sprint Car title at the speedway, which have now come in three different decades in the RoadRunner & Lake Road Auto Sales-sponsored division. The Franklin, Pa. driver was also the 1989 and 1997 Mercer champion. Felmlee started off the year on a tear and went on to capture three victories, six heat wins, 12 top 5s, and 16 top 10s in his World of Wheels/Lutz Auto Body/Vinyl Graphics-sponsored #6.

Arnie Kent had a career year with four wins and has now has won a feature in each of the last eight seasons. He’s also finished second in the points four times in the last seven seasons. Defending champion Rod George was shutout of victory lane, but was in the championship hunt until engine woes on the final night. Fourth through tenth in points with wins in parentheses were Rob Eyler (4), Skip Dougherty (1), Danny Holtgraver, Todd Bauer (1), Tom Quarterson, Riki Likowski, and Mike Dehner. Other winners were Gary Edwards, Scott Bonnell, Mark Murphy, Brian Ellenberger, and Mat Neely.

Frank Guidace had a stellar season in the American Racer/Lias Tire Modifieds to collect his first title of any kind. The Mercer, Pa. driver had four wins including the $2,000 Jeff Hoffman Memorial and T3 All-Star Series “Little Guy Nationals” in his G&G Auto Outlet #1G. Despite sitting out April 15 due to engine woes and being mired in 14th in points at the end of April, Guidace stormed back to win the title by a mere three points on the strength of eight heat wins, 16 top 5s, and 19 top 10s. It was a very emotional night for Guidace as he remembered everyone who got him to where he’s at. Guidace returned just hours before the banquet from Atlantic City where his 2007 car is on display at the Motorsports Expo.

Mike Stine made the long tow each week from central Pa. and was rewarded with a runner-up in points and four wins in his first full-time Mercer season. Steve Young was shutout of victory lane, but led the points for much of the year until a late season DNF. Kevin Hoffman also led the points during the summer and had three wins in his first run at the championship. Defending champion Gary Smoker led the points in April and had a strong year with four victories and fifth in points. Completing the top 10 with wins in parentheses were Jimmy Holden, Brad Rapp (5), Matt Reeher, Garrett Krummert, and Kevin Green. Other winners were Bill Adams and Billy VanPelt.

For the second straight year, Brian Booher topped the Tire Express Stock Cars. The Sandy Lake, Pa. racer had another phenomenal season in the Terry Hoover-owned, Ed & Jerry’s Auto Service/Harry & Tim’s Roofing-sponsored #00H with six wins, eight heat wins, three B mains, 16 top 5s, and 19 top 10s. Booher has now won 13 of his 20 career wins in the last two seasons.
Two-time champion Andy Buckley had another typical strong season with three wins to finish runner-up in points. Bill Lanigan had a career best season to finish third and is still looking for his first career win. Mike Pegher, Jr. was fourth with eight wins and may have contended for the title had he not missed four nights. Veteran Terry Wheeler completed the top five and had two wins. Sixth through tenth with wins in parentheses were Rick Norco (1), Andy Thompson, Bryan Shaffer, Mark Sanders, and Ryan Moyer. Other winners were Kevin Thompson, Doug Iorio II, Shaun Hooks, Tim Deutsch, and Rusty Wheeler.

Bryan Wagner was crowned the third different Strictly Stock Champion in as many seasons. The New Wilmington, Pa. teenage rookie had an amazing season with seven wins, seven heat wins, 20 top 5s, and a perfect 24-for-24 in top 10s driving his family-owned #56. He received the trademark championship shotgun from Maurer’s Trading Post. Second through tenth in points with wins in parentheses were Paul Reiser (3), Dave Airgood, Jr. (5), Carl Ealy (7), William Morrison III, Dave Bass, Curt Bish, Sr. (2), Josh Seippel, Randy Ealy, and Bill Kluck, Jr.
Also being recognized for his championship was Russ Dunn. The Fenelton, Pa. driver captured the E-Mod seven-race series title with a victory and perfect attendance in the #47. Big Daddy Speed Center, Bassett Wheels, and Precise Racing Products awarded certificates varying from $25-$60 for various drivers in each division. Kudos went out to the nine drivers with perfect attendance as they received a certificate to recognize their dedication to the speedway in 2006.
Corporate sponsor announcer Jeff Wimer emceed the event for the first night and thanked the sponsors, employees, press, drivers, owners, and all of the fans for making 2004 another success. Track announcer Mike Dutko became ill just over a week ago and was just released from the hospital a couple days ago and was unable to emcee the event for the first time in his 27-year announcing career.

Special thanks went out to the Mercer East End and Jefferson Fire Departments along with Mesaros Towing. The 2007 season was previewed with many upcoming special events. It was officially announced that the Strictly Stocks were dropped from competition and replaced by the front-wheel-drive four-cylinder Mini Stocks. Bill Bauer of the TUSA Star’s Championship Tour was on hand and spoke about the Mod Lites, which will be on the weekly schedule in 2007. A DJ closed out the banquet until midnight with live music for everyone’s dancing and listening pleasures.

I knew I could do this, and we’re looking forward to a great season in 2007.” Felmlee also honored his crew chief and former racer Chad Reitz and retiring crew member Bob Graham with championship jackets. Scott Snow of 4 Your Car Connection surprised all in attendance by awarding Felmlee and his crew additional money, embroidered championship hats, and a $300 gift certificate towards a meal and title celebration at a local restaurant. Racing every week, especially running two cars each night at the end of season, takes a lot of time. I enjoy racing the Pro Stocks and have a lot of fun in this class. It’s hard to leave the class because I enjoy it so much. We’ll run the E Mod most of this coming season, and we’ll run some of the special Pro Stock races as well.” Gerry Bruce of Franklin, Pa., who was the 2005 Pro Stock track champion, accepted the championship plaque for the 2006 William R. Rod George of Kittanning, Pa., was named the winner of the 2006 Hard Luck Award. The three-time Super Sprint track champion was in the hunt for a fourth title when engine woes started to plague his team in late July. As a result, George fell out of contention in the point chase. The 2006 Tri-City Speedway Lifetime Dedication Award was presented to retired flagman Greg Wheeling of Franklin, Pa. Wheeling was a flagman for over 25 years at many area tracks, including the last 11 seasons at Tri-City, before he announced his retirement at the end of the season. Those drivers were also chosen by random draw prior to the banquet. Other contingency sponsors included Pennzoil, Hoosier Tire, Precise Racing, Big Daddy’s Speed Center, Bassett Wheels, and the Oakland Township Volunteer Fire Department. Tri-City’s Public Relations Director Brian Spaid closed the banquet with news that the track will open for the 2007 season on Sunday April 29th with a five-division program of the 4 Your Car Connection Super Sprints, Schwab’s Ford DIRT Modifieds, RPM Auto Sales/Shawgo Real Estate E Mods, E.F. Rogers Plumbing & Heating Pro Stocks and Klapec Auto Body Thundercars. All division sponsors are returning this season. There will be two nights of vacation for the track management and race teams on July 15th and August 26th. With the folding of the National Sprint Tour (NST), it will not return to Tri-City in 2007. No special sprint car races are scheduled at the track to date. Tri-City will continue to be sanctioned by DIRT MotorSports in 2007. The track will join with Lernerville as the DIRT Modifieds compete in the new Western Region of DIRT Northeast. More news will be released in coming weeks, including a point fund for the regional title. Both tracks will also continue to feature the Big Block Modified Challenge Series. There is the possibility that the dual track series will expand, and further announcements may be forthcoming. As for special events, Tri-City will run the 4th Annual Rankin & Son Excavating Dick Rankin Memorial on Sunday May 27th. The date for the 15th Annual Kodiak Memorial is not set at this time. In the E Mod ranks, unless a new sponsor steps forward within the next month, the E Series will come to an end after three seasons. Track officials want to ensure that a point fund exists to entice E Mod drivers across the region to compete at the half-mile Venango County oval. The All Star 30 will return as part of the Oil Region Labor Day Classic. Willam R. Karns Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning will return as title sponsor of the Detroit Iron Pro Stock Series. The four-race schedule will include the Oil Region Labor Day Classic and the 11th Annual CSOnline Applefest 100, which will close out the season on Sunday September 16th. That event will also include the 5th Annual Apple Core 20 for the Thundercars. The World of Outlaws 360OTC Late Model Series will compete at Tri-City on September 1st and 2nd for the annual Oil Region Labor Day Classic. This two-day event has quickly developed into an annual pilgrimage for Late Model fans, and will again include the 3rd Annual South Ghetto celebration on Saturday night. In other news, track officials are also searching for a sponsor of the 2007 Hard Charger Award. The award honors the driver that scores the most passing points in the feature races of all divisions combined. R.N. Goss Gas and Lincoln Electric will combine forces for the third season in a row for the Lincoln Welders Ironman Award. At the end of the season, a new Lincoln Welder will be presented to the race team that completes the greatest percentage of laps in heat and feature race competition in all divisions combined. More news about the upcoming season will be released in coming weeks, including the 2007 schedule

Jason Meyers returning to World of Outlaws in 2007

By Bobby Gerould – December 23, 2006 – Clovis, CA. …Jason Meyers announced today that he will compete for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car championship next season. Meyers, 27, finished second in the World of Outlaws point standings in 2005. He spent last season racing with the National Sprint Tour.

“I am enthusiastic and committed to running for the Outlaws championship”, said Meyers. “I think they (WoO) have made great strides in all aspects of their racing program. They have a nice television package with ESPN2, and Speed, and that excites me.”

Meyers believes that the competition in the World of Outlaws series will also make him a better racer. The 2002 Calistoga Speedway track champion said, “The series will be incredibly tough next year but that is how you want it to be. I talked with representatives from the World of Outlaws last week at the Performance Racing Industry show in Orlando and they impressed me with their vision for the future.”

Meyers made a natural ascension from ninth place in the final WoO standings in 2003 to fifth place in 2004. The runner-up season in `05 included four feature event wins on the international tour. “One of the exciting aspects of next year”, said Meyers, “is coming into the season as a veteran driver. I’ll be 28 at the end of January and we’ve been ‘around the block’ now. Our team knows the tracks, and we should have a solid base set-up everywhere we race.”

While Meyers transitions from being the ‘talented kid’ to the ‘respected pro’, his past accomplishments speak loudly about his ability behind the wheel. Meyers was named Rookie of the Year at the Knoxville Nationals in 2000, and then earned the same honor in his first Chili Bowl Midget Nationals attempt in 2003. Previously, Meyers became the youngest driver to win a feature event at Calistoga Speedway. He did that as a 20 year-old in 1999. A former micro-midget National Champion (1993), Meyers owns wins on hallowed ground from Knoxville, Iowa to Elma, Washington.

While winged dirt sprint car racing will be taking the majority of his time, Meyers also plans to compete in special pavement events when time allows. “I want to run Silver Crown, Midget, and Sprint Car races on pavement whenever we can”, he said. “I really enjoyed running our pavement car here at the end of the year. Our team met some great racing people and did some networking that can be beneficial for Elite Racing for years to come.”

Meyers’ ultimate goal is to attract the attention of a NASCAR program. “I feel that in order to achieve my goals of racing in NASCAR it is absolutely necessary that I compete in asphalt events in 2007”, he said. I’m not sure how we are going to make it happen yet, but I am confident that we will be able to work out the details over the next few weeks.”

The Worlds of Outlaws season opening event is planned for February 9, 2007 at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DIRT LATE MODEL & FLAT OUT Magazines Sold To Three Wide Media

Knoxville, TN --- Beginning January 2, 2007 the extremely popular dirt track racing oriented national magazines Dirt Late Model and Flat Out will have new ownership when Three Wide Media based in Independence, IA assumes proprietorship of the magazines from Mind Over Media Publishing, announced Dean Nardi of Mind Over Media and Brian Lillie of Three Wide Media on Wednesday morning.

"I feel we are passing the torch on to the right person in Brian Lillie to carry on the tradition of fine quality publishing that was begun 12 years ago with Dirt Late Model magazine,” stated Nardi. “Brian is bright and energetic and clearly has the best interests of the sport at heart."

Three Wide Media, an offshoot of sorts of the successful eCreative Group is headed by Lillie, Mike O’Connor and Rick Hartzell, all of whom have extensive backgrounds in the dirt racing industry.

“Our decision to purchase the magazines was based on a few different factors,” explained Lillie. “The first factor was our passion for the sport. Regardless of how well a person can run a business if there isn’t a passion for it, it’s just work. I’ve always been inspired by those who took a hobby and made it a career.”

“The second reason was because of my other company, eCreative Group. At eCreative Group we have a division that is dedicated to motorsports marketing. We’ve worked with numerous sanctioning bodies, tracks, promoters, and race teams over the past couple years. We felt that the addition of these two magazines made our agency stronger, and visa versa, we also feel that our agency makes the magazines stronger.”

Subscribers and advertisers will see little immediate change in production, printing, staff and content other than the goal to expand the scope and depth of the publications.

"There should be no apparent changes to either magazine,” commented Nardi. “The entire staff will remain in their current position. There is no reason to mess with something that works very well. At the same time, it will be very exciting to see how the new owners expand upon the business and use their expertise to grow the company in years to come."

“The only change is the name of the publishing company and the location of the corporate office from Knoxville, TN to Independence, IA,” added Lillie. “All employees of Mind Over Media Publishing will continue to be employees of Three Wide Media. We’re very excited about having everyone stay on board too. They’ve all done such a wonderful job taking the magazines to the level that they are currently. We have plans to expand in a few areas to give more benefits to subscribers and advertisers alike. With the current team, and the addition of my team at eCreative Group, we believe we are poised and ready to take these magazines to the next level.”

Lillie and associates also have some specific goals in place for the publications.

“Our goals with the magazines are to continue with the road map that Dean has put in place,” said Lillie. “To add value to the magazines we plan on developing a new online presence that will serve as an extension of the great coverage that they both currently have for subscribers. For advertisers, there will be online marketing tools that will add tons of value and even return on their advertising investment.”

“In short, we just want to stay on track with the success that they’ve both had so far and continue to grow them.”

Tim Lee will remain as editor of Dirt Late Model while Justin Zoch retains the editor’s position at Flat Out. Susan Bauer Lee and Martin DeFries will also remain as art directors of Dirt Late Model and Flat Out, respectively.

Both magazines feature some of the top Motorsports writers and photographers from around the country including Al Martin III, Todd Turner, Bryan Householder, Paul Fletcher, Doc Lehman, Scott Wolfe, Doug Kennedy, Barry Johnson, Mike Sullivan, Bob Markos, Kendra Jacobs, Michael O’Leary, Tony Hammett, David Allio, Bob Appleget, Robbie Ray, Jerry Reigle, Pete Zanardi, Jim Butler, Mike Campbell, Rick Schwallie, Chuck Gonzales, Ron Meyer, Ken Coles, Mike Nelligan, Steve Koletar, Tom Hein, Mike Feltenberger, Brian Tidball and dozens of others.
Nardi, who two years ago went into partnership with Carl Short as the promoters of the famed dirt Late Model ‘crown jewel’ race, the Dirt Track World Championship, will consider additional race promotions once Three Wide Media assumes ownership of the magazines.

"For my wife Theresa and myself, there is a sadness with letting these two magazines go,” commented Nardi. “We've been in the racing business as publishers since 1990 and as competitors and fans for many years before that. It's been a huge part of both our lives. But as Pete Seeger has said, 'There is a season and a time for every purpose, under heaven.' This is a good thing - both for the new owners of the magazines and us - and a time of new beginnings."For additional information on Dirt Late Model and Flat Out magazines visit: www.mompub.com, www.ecreativegroup.com and/or www.threewidemedia.com

All Stars Purchase Mid-American Sprint Series

CAMARGO, IL (12-12-06) – Guy Webb, president of the All Star Circuit of Champions, has announced that the All Star Circuit of Champions has completed the purchase of the Mid American Sprint Series from Scott Benic and Joe Darmofal. The MASS series previously competed in the Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio area in 2004 and 2005 but was inactive in 2006. “I recognized the need to help bolster 410 winged sprint car racing in the Midwest,” said Webb, “and we will operate the series mainly in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, and Iowa.” The group will also co-sanction various races with the All Star Circuit of Champions.

“We’re working on a 20 to 25 race schedule,” Webb stated. “This will be a $2000 to win, $200 to start series and I think we will have the support of some good race teams in this area.” The revitalized series will still carry the “MASS” moniker, but those letters will now represent the new name “Midwest All Star Series”. The group will be governed by the same rule book used by the All Star Circuit of Champions and will follow the same points structure. Membership forms will be available soon along with the 2007 schedule of events. An All Star Circuit of Champions membership includes eligibility to accumulate season points with both groups. The MASS series will have a season championship point fund as an incentive to the drivers who wish to travel with the group.

O’Reilly Auto Parts, who recently signed a multi-year deal with the All Stars as the series title sponsor, will also be involved with the new MASS series. The addition of the Midwest All Star Series to the mix will help O’Reilly Auto Parts to increase their exposure and provide additional advertising opportunities to them across the Midwest. “I’m extremely pleased to have O’Reilly Auto Parts be involved with our efforts to help strengthen 410 winged sprint car racing in this area,” said Webb. “Enthusiasm and cooperation is what it will take to move this sport ahead in 2007.”

Abby Lou Foundation holds 2nd Annual Fundraiser

The Abby Lou Foundation announced today that it will hold it's second annual fund raiser. Those interested in assisting the foundation may log onto www.abbylou.org and purchase a chance to win a deluxe home entertainment system. Tickets are just $10 each and there will only be 500 sold with the drawing to held 12/15/2006. The Home Entertainment System includes a 42" Plasma Television, a Sony 5 DVD 1,000 watt home theater system and a one year subscription to Dish Network. It would make the perfect Christmas gift.

The purpose of the Abby Lou Foundation is to lend a helping hand to families in paying their medical expenses associated with their child̢۪s disability. We accept applications and upon approval we contact the families and discuss what the foundation can provide to them. In some cases the Abby Lou Foundation pays 100% of their expenses. Applications are reviewed upon the family's current insurance coverage and financial situation. Even if a family has insurance they are still eligible as the costs of deductibles and co-pays can be astronomical.

We had a tremendous amount of support last year from everyone with the Chopper, said founder Paul Joiner. We were able to help several families and want to be able to do that again this year. The Sprint car racing community has welcomed us with open arms and we thank them as well as all the drivers and teams that have generously lent us their time and gifts. Thank you in advance and good luck to all those that donate to our foundation and we look forward to seeing the fans beginning in February in Volusia for the World of Outlaws season opener. If you wish to purchase a ticket you may do so at www.abbylou.org or just make a donation. You can also mail a check or money order to the address on the site.

TRI-CITY SPEEDWAY 2006 SEASON REVIEW

TRI-CITY SPEEDWAY 2006 SEASON REVIEWby Brian Spaid

November 12, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FRANKLIN, PA …. Tri-City Speedway concluded its 11th consecutive season of dirt track action and the 2006 track champions will be honored on January 6th at the Rocky Grove Fire Hall near Franklin. Top drivers at the half-mile Venango County oval included Bob Felmlee (4 Your Car Connection Super Sprints), Kevin Bolland (Schwab’s Ford DIRT Modifieds), Brent Rhebergen (RPM Auto Sales/Shawgo Real Estate E Mods), Bobby Whitling (E.F. Rogers Plumbing & Heating Pro Stocks) and Jeff Manners (Klapec Auto Body Thundercars).

For the third time in his career, Bob Felmlee of Franklin, Pa., captured the Super Sprint championship at Tri-City. Driving his World of Wheels Maxim No. 6, Felmlee returned to action in 2005 nearly six years after his near fatal accident at the track. In 2006, Felmlee’s return was completed with a stellar season that included the track title at Mercer Raceway Park. At Tri-City, Felmlee notched six wins and 10 top five finishes in 13 events. He also scored four heat race wins. With four consecutive wins to end the season, Felmlee captured his third career title at Tri-City. His other championships occurred in 1996 and 1998. Todd Bauer finished second in the point standings ahead of Brent Covell and Rod George, who was the early point leader with three victories, but suffered from engine problems late in the season that relegated him to the sidelines and opened the door for Felmlee to snare the title. Gale Ruth Jr. rounded out the top five in points. Joining Felmlee and George in victory lane with single wins were Andy McKisson, Rob Eyler, Ed Lynch Jr., and Steve Kinser, who won the National Sprint Tour (NST) race on July 16th.

Kevin Bolland of New Brighton, Pa., scored his second career title at Tri-City in the DIRT Modified division. Piloting his Cintas Uniform/Bolland Machine/Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe Bicknell No. 777, Bolland earned four feature wins and nine top five finishes in 12 events, including the Kodiak Memorial on July 23rd. With 26 career feature wins at Tri-City, Bolland became the top winner in the division surpassing legends Lou Blaney and Ed Lynch. Bolland, who also won the track title in 2000, added six heat race wins to his point tally. The Tri-City championship completed an amazing season for Bolland, who also won the Lernerville Speedway and Big Block Modified Challenge Series titles, the latter an eight-race series run between Tri-City and Lernerville. Amidst his championship campaign, Bolland’s team ran with heavy hearts as his mother, Rosalie, was hospitalized all summer with leukemia, and she eventually succumbed to the disease in early September after Bolland secured his titles. Rex King finished second nearly matching Bolland’s statistics with four feature wins, but still ended up a bridesmaid for the third year in a row as Bolland was just a little bit more consistent than the Buckeye State favorite. Jeremiah Shingledecker, Joe Crawford and Chris Schiffer rounded out the top five in points. Shingledecker scored two wins while Russell King and Danny Johnson each earned one win. Russell King won the BRP Modified Tour Dick Rankin Memorial on May 28th. Johnson’s victory on August 6th was his first as the driver for team owner Dave Thompson. Johnson and Thompson teamed for several huge wins at the end of the season including the Syracuse Eckerd 200.

For the third time in his career, Brent Rhebergen of Clymer, N.Y., captured the E Mod track championship at Tri-City. After a year’s hiatus, the 2002 and 2003 champion returned to full-time action at Tri-City as a teammate to Shawn Shingledecker. Piloting Shingledecker’s Lucky Hills Golf Course/Madara Equipment Pierce No. 45S, Rhebergen scored four feature wins and 10 top five finishes in 13 events adding to his Tri-City E Mod win total (45). He also won two heat races. Shingledecker scored two feature wins and four heat race wins placing second to Rhebergen in the points and completing a great season for their team. Jim Frontz, David Atkinson and defending track champion Matt Lux rounded out the top five. Lux and Mike Potosky each scored three feature wins. Potosky captured the All Star 30 on September 3rd and the four-race Fame RV Center E Series title. Sharon Speedway champion Russ Dunn (1) was the only other feature winner.

After a winless 2005 season, Pro Stock star Bobby Whitling of Seneca, Pa., returned to Tri-City with a vengeance. Capturing five feature wins and 13 top five finishes in 16 events, Whitling won the track championship aboard his E&K Equipment/Dulaney’s Garage Chevrolet No. 7W. Whitling also earned eight heat race wins. He had to fend off the hard charging Doug Iorio II for his third title matching championship efforts from 1999 and 2002. Like Whitling, Iorio snagged five feature wins and eight heat race wins, but mechanical troubles in the second half of the season resulted in a couple of poor performances. As a result, Whitling snagged the title over Iorio. Dave Ferringer, Scott Myers and Jason Engles rounded out the top five point contenders. Ferringer captured four feature wins, including the 10th Annual CSOnline Applefest 100 on September 17th. Defending track champion Gerry Bruce and Andy Buckley each won once. Bruce subbed for rookie Jackson Humanic in the four-race William R. Karns Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Detroit Iron Pro Stock Series, and won the series title to boot. Jeff Manners of Cherrytree, Pa., dominated the Thundercar division to capture his second career title in the class. Manners won the first Thundercar title at Tri-City in 2003. This season, Manners earned six feature wins and 12 top five finishes in 13 events along with four heat race wins in his Jerry’s Auto Repair/Cherrytree General Store Buick No. 16. Josh Seippel won three features, but was unable to catch Manners in the point chase. In another stellar performance, rookie Bill Myers won nine heat races and one feature race on his way to a third place finish in the points. Curt Bish Sr. and Charlie McMillen rounded out the top five. Other single feature winners included Bish, Bill Kluck Jr. and Eric Goldberg, who won the Apple Core 20 on September 17th.

In addition to the E Mod title, Brent Rhebergen won the 2006 Maloney Tool & Mold Hard Charger Award. It was Rhebergen’s first Hard Charger point title. With points accumulated from all divisions based on the number of positions a driver advances in the feature finish from his official starting spot, Ferringer beat defending DIRT Modified track champion Del Rougeux Jr. by one passing point (61-60). E Mod driver Mike Samuelson finished third in the Hard Charger points followed by Thundercar champion Jeff Manners and DIRT Modified driver Andy Priest.

All champions will be honored at the Tri-City Speedway season banquet on Saturday January 6th at the Rocky Grove Fire Hall in Rocky Grove, Pa., located about 6.5 miles from the track just outside Franklin. For banquet information and tickets, please contact the track office at (814) 473-4038.

GUY GRIFFIN WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE TITLE

HARTFORD, OH – (Nov. 8, 2006) Years ago, the racing community was adamant in the superstition that peanuts and the color green were “bad luck”. Whether you were actually superstitious or not, wearing or carrying anything green would result in a strict reprimand from seasoned race fans. But you would be hard-pressed to convince Greenville, PA’s, Guy Griffin that those suspicions are legitimate considering Griffin has wheeled his very green, #11 Green Flag Sprint to a second season point championship in as many years at Sharon Speedway. The mild-mannered Griffin has certainly dispelled that superstition!

Guy Griffin was born and raised in Greenville, PA, and attended Reynolds High School where he was a decorated athlete in both football and wrestling. In 1987, he landed his first full-time ride in a sprint car owned by Karl Brest of Kinsman, Ohio, and the team spent two years together, racing mainly at Buckeye Speedway in Orrville. Guy recalls winning only one heat race during that time, but says they did make every show. In 1989, Guy bought his own 410 Sprint from Ron Trevis and, unfortunately, wrecked it at the end of the year … and spent the next three years making payments on it! In ‘93, Griffin climbed into a micro-sprint, competing at Hickory Speedway in New Castle, and won the point championship that year for the micros. Two years later, he shifted gears and drove a 6-cylinder modified for Jim Rowe, then made another change and moved into big block Modified racing for Don Fair in 1996. He raced at Mercer and Sharon every week with Fair and won the Modified points at Mercer in 1997. Guy decided to be a driver/owner again and bought Fair’s car which he continued to race at Mercer and Sharon in ’98 and ’99. Griffin’s racing was put on hold during the 2000 and 2001 seasons and in 2002, he sporadically drove a car for Todd Shaffer at Mercer. In 2003, he bought another V8 Modified. In July of that year, Griffin was involved in a serious crash at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA. Griffin said, “I always wanted to ride in a helicopter, but I didn’t even know I was in it!” Those who know Guy, know and appreciate his sense of humor, even in the most somber situations. The roof was cut from his modified to extract him from the mess and he was life-flighted to Allegheny Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He suffered a severe concussion with memory loss and dizziness. Thankfully, he completely recovered, but Guy’s racing was temporarily sidelined.

In 2004, Dave Blaney introduced a sealed engine racing program at Sharon Speedway with a new division called the Green Flag Sprints. The concept offers racers a low-cost alternative, not only to attract new drivers, but also for those who have been forced to quit racing due to escalating cost. This was the perfect match for Griffin. Not only could he get back into a sprint car, but he could do it on a limited budget and Guy was in!

Griffin drove his green machine to the 2005 point championship and followed up with a second “ace” in 2006. He only missed one feature event all season, and won 6 point race A-mains. He also scored his biggest win of the year taking home the $1500 winner’s purse on the first night of the Sharon Nationals. “That was my most memorable win of ‘06”, recalls Guy.

When asked how much time he spends working on his car, he replied, “I could spend every minute on it just because I love it! But honestly, we work on the car Tuesday and Thursday night from 4-6:00 and that’s it. There’s very little maintenance to it. My dad couldn’t believe it when I first started racing the Green Flag because we hardly worked on it.” Guy continues, “This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in racing. The pros outweigh the cons in this division. You can actually drive the car and work on the car and tweak things to make it handle better.” Guy can also attest to the durability of the engine. “We’re coming up on our fourth year to race this engine and we haven’t had anything done to it. The horsepower hasn’t gone down at all.” Guy’s crew consists of John Adams, Tom Kirby, Dan Horstman, Chris Mott and Larry Thurber, 3 of which help out at the garage. Guy credits his 2006 Championship title, “to my crew, and support from my family and friends and Stacey (girlfriend), of course. I’ve never had anyone in my corner like that.”

Guy would love to have the opportunity to race for a living and says “racing a sprint with the World of Outlaws,” would be his choice. “I think it’s still the grass roots of racing and I think dirt track racing is so much more exciting.” Guy works full-time for PennDot on the Bridge Crew.

Guy summarizes this year as “the best season we’ve ever had!” and adds, “and we haven’t wrecked a car in three years.” His parents were able to come to the races for the first time in seven years and he expressed his gratitude for the support of his daughter, Rachel, his sister and brother-in-law (Cheryl and Jerry Hazlett), his nephew, Curt Hazlett, girlfriend Stacey and daughters, Tiffany and Heather. He said, “It’s all about family. That’s all you have in life.” His only regrets were that his deceased brother and daughter couldn’t be here for this time in his life. Always the “fan-friendly” driver, Guy added a special thanks to the “Turn 4 Gang” who have become avid supporters over the past year. “It’s been a great year!” Griffin concluded.

Congratulations to Guy Griffin and the entire crew of the green #11 Green Flag Sprint.

Response Overwhelmingly Positive To Sprints At WCS in '07

Orrville, OH --- When management of Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH held an exploratory meeting with Sprint Car drivers and team owners on October 24 they entered the meeting with some trepidation regarding what kind of response they would receive. It was for naught as the meeting surpassed all expectations and was a positive and enlightening evening that subsequently found management making the decision to bring back Sprint Cars to the popular 3/8 mile banked oval on a weekly basis in 2007. What management also didn’t really expect was the overwhelming positive response that decision would bring from not only teams and race fans in the region but from also across the country.

“I still having a hard time believing the response from everyone, it's been so positive and everyone is so excited about it,” stated Tina Heil, General Manager of WCS. “I'm getting email every day, from business men, car owners, drivers and fans showing their appreciation of what we're doing and that's exciting.”

“Was this the right decision? Absolutely without a doubt in my mind!”With Sprint Car racing struggling in some areas of the country, WCS owner & promoter Ernie Coffman made a three-year commitment to the division in hopes of building it long term at his track and the response from within the industry was immediate and positive as well.
”Sprint car racing is one of the most exciting forms of motorsports out there and for Wayne County Speedway to bring Sprint Cars back into its weekly program is a bonus for all the fans who attend the weekly events,” commented Chris Dolack, Vice-President of Public Relations for DIRT Motorsports and the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars. “With so many of the legends in the sport having raced there in the past and living nearby, like Brad Doty and Jac Haudenschild, it's a great chance for the next wave of superstars to get their starts at a place that helped to launch the careers of so many others.”

“Whether the sprint cars at Wayne County run under in a sanctioned event or during a weekly race, merely having them back and racing weekly is a big step forward.”

Dolack wasn’t alone in his excitement that WCS was backing the Sprint Car division.

“It is very exciting news, especially at a time when we are all-too-frequently losing weekly winged 410-cubic-inch sprint car tracks,” offered Tom Schmeh, the Executive Director of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum in Knoxville, Iowa.

“I believe this means that Wayne County Speedway will be the 21st weekly winged '410' track in the nation. Incredibly, five of those tracks are in the Buckeye State alone. And twelve are in the Pennsylvania/Ohio region, with 15 of the total 21 located east of the Mississippi River!”

Regional response has also been extremely favorable. “I am glad to see the Sprints come back,” said Jim Figley, Team Manager for Eric ‘Spud’ Myers Racing, a dirt Late Model team. Figley formerly spent many years working for such Sprint Car stars as Dean Jacobs, Rocky Hodges and others. “Wayne County Speedway is trying things that they feel will work best for everybody!”

“I think this is very smart,” commented Colleen Latsch, a former WCS staff member and wife of retired Sprint Car driver Mike Latsch, the 1987 WCS Sprint Car champion. “There are many Sprint Cars in this area or those having the parts to build one up to run locally again. With a no engine limit, there should be a good selection of cars who need a place to run locally.”

“I know people who no longer attend the local tracks as they do not run Sprints. Wayne County always had a good solid core of weekly sprint cars who put on an exciting show for the fans. I have heard several including myself say I do not mind the admission price as long as I can see both Sprints and Late Models on the evenings program.”

“I’m happy to see that they are coming back,” added long time race fan Gary Baker.

Even WCS staff members are looking forward to the 2007 with the addition of Sprint Cars as co-headliners with the Super Late Models. “It’s great to hear the Sprints are coming back in 2007,” said Al Hutchsion, Jr., a photographer. “I grew up at WayneCounty watching Sprints and Late Models and I sure have missed them these pastthree years. They put on a heck of a show when they returned one night thisyear. Great news to hear they are coming back. I’m really ready to takesome photos now!”

Wayne County Speedway is located nine miles east of Wooster, OH on US Route 30 or 15 miles west of Massillon, OH on US Route 30 then one mile north on Carr Road.
