Spokane, WA (January 26, 2006) - The Villelli Racing Midget racecar with driver Tony Berry will be making the trek to the first ever indoor dirt event at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem this weekend. The track is in the process of final construction and is said to be approximately the same size as the heralded annual Chili Bowl event in Tulsa, OK, around a 1/5th of a mile.
Berry, a senior at Gonzaga University in Spokane and the 2005 Rookie of the Year with the Inland Northwest Sprint Car Association, will be piloting the Speed Sport Report, Budweiser, River City River Runners, Idaho National Guard Ellis midget, powered by a Pontiac. "I am really excited for this weekend's events. We found out about this race right around Christmas time and Tony and Susan Villelli were kind enough to allow me to drive their car at this first ever event."
This race weekend will not be the first time that Berry has driven a vehicle on dirt, he has over 100 event wins on dirt tracks in the Northwest dating back to his earlier karting days. "I have always had tremendous respect for dirt racing because I think that it requires more car control to be fast and puts more into the driver's hands. Due to the limited number of dirt racing venues in the inland Northwest our focus has been pavement for the last few years, but we always try and run a few kart races on dirt during the winter time at least."
Berry will also be partaking in the Saturday morning events returning to his roots and running the karting portion of the event. "A 1/5th of a mile is a tight midget track, but it's actually a pretty good sized kart track, especially for winter time indoor racing. I am really looking forward to heading down there this weekend. It's definitely a good start to our 2006 campaign."
In 2006 Berry will drive the #3 Late Model with the Inland Northwest Super Stock Association, the #53 with the Washington Midget Racing Association as well the #53 Winged Sprint Car at select events.
Events will be held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in the Livestock Pavilion with practice Friday night and racing all day Saturday and Sunday, January 27- 29. Come out and watch one of the most exciting forms of auto racing on one of the tightest new tracks in the Northwest. For additional event information contact Bob Leach at 541.981.1200
