Skyline Speedway to Open Sprint Point Fund

By Scott WolfeSTEWART-Skyline Speedway near Stewart, Ohio will open its gates for the 44th anniversary season Friday, April 18 when the 410 Outlaw Sprint cars and the powerful dirt Late Models come to town for this festive opening night of racing. Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Modifieds, Four Cylinders, and Mini-Wedges share the racing card.

Last year the sprint cars returned to Skyline for the first time since 1998 and were immediately a big hit. Improvements at Skyline along with regular sprint racing caught the eye of the regional touring group, “The O’Reilly All-Star Circuit of Champions” who will make two appearances at the Athens County oval. One of these events will be the Wednesday night portion of the All-Ohio Outlaw Sprint Speedweek on June 25 and a return visit July 18. New owner Billy Jarrell has made numerous improvements to the facility, but some of the intended improvements were put on hold due to the extremely wet winter. In fact, opening day had been slated for March 28, but heavy rain delayed the necessary work projects until this Friday night.

Long a hot bed of Late Model racing, an improved purse hopes to get even better competition on the fast 3/8 clay oval. Several defending champions and regional series racers are expected for this week’s opener.Skyline Speedway and K-C Raceway have teamed up for a dual-point fund with prizes totally near $20,000. Points must be collected at both tracks. The sprint car champion will win a set of All-Pro Aluminum Heads valued at over $6,000 among other possible contingencies, second will be a JEI sprint chassis, and third a product certificate from DMI racing components. K-C ‘s sprint opener is Saturday, April 19.

Gates open at 4 p.m., warm-ups are at 6 p.m., time trials at 6:30 and racing at racing at 7 p.m. Adult general admission is $15, Pit passes are $30, kids 6-12 $5, and under six free.The Skyline Speedway is located just 4.1 miles off of State Route 50 and 32 on Athens County Road 53 Bethany Ridge Road.
