Jason Meyers returning to World of Outlaws in 2007

By Bobby Gerould – December 23, 2006 – Clovis, CA. …Jason Meyers announced today that he will compete for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car championship next season. Meyers, 27, finished second in the World of Outlaws point standings in 2005. He spent last season racing with the National Sprint Tour.

“I am enthusiastic and committed to running for the Outlaws championship”, said Meyers. “I think they (WoO) have made great strides in all aspects of their racing program. They have a nice television package with ESPN2, and Speed, and that excites me.”

Meyers believes that the competition in the World of Outlaws series will also make him a better racer. The 2002 Calistoga Speedway track champion said, “The series will be incredibly tough next year but that is how you want it to be. I talked with representatives from the World of Outlaws last week at the Performance Racing Industry show in Orlando and they impressed me with their vision for the future.”

Meyers made a natural ascension from ninth place in the final WoO standings in 2003 to fifth place in 2004. The runner-up season in `05 included four feature event wins on the international tour. “One of the exciting aspects of next year”, said Meyers, “is coming into the season as a veteran driver. I’ll be 28 at the end of January and we’ve been ‘around the block’ now. Our team knows the tracks, and we should have a solid base set-up everywhere we race.”

While Meyers transitions from being the ‘talented kid’ to the ‘respected pro’, his past accomplishments speak loudly about his ability behind the wheel. Meyers was named Rookie of the Year at the Knoxville Nationals in 2000, and then earned the same honor in his first Chili Bowl Midget Nationals attempt in 2003. Previously, Meyers became the youngest driver to win a feature event at Calistoga Speedway. He did that as a 20 year-old in 1999. A former micro-midget National Champion (1993), Meyers owns wins on hallowed ground from Knoxville, Iowa to Elma, Washington.

While winged dirt sprint car racing will be taking the majority of his time, Meyers also plans to compete in special pavement events when time allows. “I want to run Silver Crown, Midget, and Sprint Car races on pavement whenever we can”, he said. “I really enjoyed running our pavement car here at the end of the year. Our team met some great racing people and did some networking that can be beneficial for Elite Racing for years to come.”

Meyers’ ultimate goal is to attract the attention of a NASCAR program. “I feel that in order to achieve my goals of racing in NASCAR it is absolutely necessary that I compete in asphalt events in 2007”, he said. I’m not sure how we are going to make it happen yet, but I am confident that we will be able to work out the details over the next few weeks.”

The Worlds of Outlaws season opening event is planned for February 9, 2007 at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida.
